LSU AgCenter sugarcane field day set for July 20.Sugarcane varieties, soil fertility, insect/disease management and weed control will be among topics covered.

The LSU AgCenter’s 29th Annual Sugarcane Field Day will be held July 20 at the Sugar Research Station near St. Gabriel, beginning with registration and an equipment display from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Following the equipment display sugarcane scientists will provide the latest research-based information during field tours, which will include: 

  • New sugarcane varieties and energy canes.

  • Soil fertility.

  • Insect and disease management updates.

  • Weed control issues.

Guest speakers following the field tour will include Mike Strain, Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, and Jim Simon, general manager of the American Sugar Cane League.

The field day will conclude with a noon meal and refreshments provided by the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The Sugar Research Station is on Highway 30, 11 miles south of Tiger Stadium on the LSU campus, or nine miles north of Gonzales.
