Wild pigs may be a boon to hunters, but to many of the nation’s landowners, they are a nuisance, an economic and environmental liability, and a disease hazard.

Farmers and landowners can arm themselves with information from a new website dedicated to providing research-based, useful solutions for feral hogs that damage their crops and property. The site, http://extension.org/feral_hogs, lists resources ranging from the history and biology of feral hogs to designs for corral traps.

The website, organized by a national consortium of wildlife biologists and Extension Service specialists, includes both state-specific help and general suggestions. Mississippi State University’s feral hog website, http://wildpiginfo.msstate.edu/, is linked to the national site and includes the educational video, “A Pickup Load of Pigs: The Feral Swine Pandemic.”

“Because wild pig damage is a nationwide concern, Extension personnel decided a collaborative website with input from specialists all over the country would be informative for natural resource managers and the public,” said Bronson Strickland, associate Extension professor at MSU. “What may be most useful is an extensive FAQ section that addresses most of the questions people have about wild pigs.”
