Farmers need contingency plans to deal with economic uncertainty

Farmers and consumers have been marveling at the  spectacular rise in farm real estate values in recent months. But some growers  may be missing an opportunity by focusing on investing in land purchases  rather than improving the land they have. Economist Michael Swanson discussed  the need to “buy a better bushel” at the American Society of Farm Managers and  Rural Appraisers annual meeting in Indianapolis, Ind.
