A UW-Extension Dairy Team's Bilingual Dairy Worker's Training Session titled "Calf Management Skills" will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at Custom Calf Raiser Deb Kurth's Farm, W8067 Brazelton Drive, Random Lake from 1 to 3 p.m. This training session will feature a mini-lecture focusing on the importance of calf management and the ten best management practices in successfully raising calves. Dairy workers will receive training from UW-Extension Dairy & Livestock Agent Tina Kohlman and Julia Reyes-Hamann, Spanish translator and calf Manager for Hanke Farms, Inc. Following the presentation participants will be demonstrated and practice hands on skills in:

Processing the newborn calf:
Colostrum Management
Esophageal Tube Feeding
Ear Tagging
Naval dipping
Ear Punching for BVD testing
Tail Docking
Dehorning
Identifying Sick Calves
Calf Respiratory Scoring
Calf Health Scoring

Bilingual dairy workers are encouraged to attend along with other calf raising professionals. All participants will receive materials in the appropriate language along with a certificate of completion. The cost for the program is $15 per person and includes materials and refreshments. The session is limited to 15 participants to provide an opportunity for all participants to participate in the demonstrations and hands on activities; therefore pre-registration is required.
