The latest California Field Crop Review from the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Sacramento, Calif., Field Office:

Barley

California’s barley harvested acreage is forecast at 70,000, 27 percent above last year. Nationally, the area for harvest at 2.55 million acres is 18 percent below the 3.11 million acres harvested the previous year.

Corn

As of June 1, the total planted California acreage of corn for all purposes is estimated at 600,000, up 9 percent from last year. Of these acres, California farmers expected to harvest 140,000 acres for grain in 2010, down 12 percent from 2009.

In the U.S., corn planted acreage is estimated at 87.9 million, 2 percent above last year. Growers expect to harvest 81 million acres for grain, 2 percent above 2009.

Cotton

California cotton growers planted 125,000 acres of upland cotton and 185,000 acres of American Pima cotton in 2010. Upland acreage is up 76 percent, and American Pima acreage is up 55 percent from 2009.

Nationally, planted upland cotton acreage is expected to total 10.7 million acres, up 19 percent from last year. Growers intend to plant 209,000 acres of American-Pima cotton, up 48 percent from last year.

Dry beans

An estimated 72,000 acres in California were seeded to dry edible beans for the 2010 season, up 5 percent from last year’s total.

The U.S. dry edible bean seeded acreage is estimated at 1.74 million acres, up 13 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 1.67 million, up 14 percent from a year ago.

Hay

On June 1, California growers expected to harvest alfalfa from 930,000 acres in 2010, down 5 percent from last year’s 980,000 acres. The estimate for all other hay to be harvested is 560,000 acres, up 4 percent from last year’s total.

U.S. acreage harvested for alfalfa hay is estimated at 20.7 million and all other hay harvested acreage is expected to total 38.9 million acres. Alfalfa is 2 percent below and other hay is 1 percent above 2009.

Oats

Oats were seeded on 240,000 acres for 2010, down 4 percent from last year’s acreage. Acreage expected to be harvested for grain totaled 25,000 acres, down 17 percent from 2009.

Nationally, the area harvested for grain at 1.32 million acres is 5 percent below 2009.

Rice

California’s seeded rice acreage is estimated at 555,000 acres; long grain rice 5,000 acres, medium grain 490,000 acres, short grain 60,000 acres. Wet field conditions and spring rainstorms delayed planting in California, decreasing planted areas.

U.S. growers are expecting to harvest 3.49 million acres of rice in 2010, 13 percent above last year. Long grain rice will be harvested from 2.75 million acres, medium grain rice from 682,000 acres, and short grain from 61,000 acres.

Safflower

California safflower growers planted 60,000 acres in 2010. Safflower acreage is up 2 percent from last year’s total.

U.S. growers are expecting to harvest 175,000 acres, 6 percent above the previous year.

Sugarbeets

California growers have planted and intend to plant 25,000 acres to sugarbeets, down 1 percent from last year's total planted acreage.

U.S. growers planted an estimated 1.18 million acres of sugarbeets for 2010, down slightly from the previous year.

Sweet potatoes

California’s sweet potato planted and harvested acreage is forecast at 18,500 acres. Cool weather and late spring season rains delayed planting in California, but growers expected a good crop with increased volume.

Nationally, the area to be harvested, at 110,200 acres, is 14 percent above the 96,900 acres harvested the previous year.

Wheat

California's Durum wheat planted acreage is estimated at 120,000 acres, 33 percent less than last year. The 100,000 acres to be harvested for grain is 41 percent below 2009. California’s acreage seeded to wheat other than Durum totaled 600,000 acres, up 2 percent from 2009.

U.S. Durum planted acreage for 2010 is estimated at 2.68 million acres, up 5 percent from last year. The area to be harvested for grain is expected to total 2.59 million acres, 7 percent above last year’s level. U.S. acreage harvested for wheat other than Durum is estimated at 32.1 million acres, 7 percent below 2009.
