Bonnie A. Charpentier, Ph.D., a chemist and vice president of Metabolex, Inc., in Hayward, Calif., has been re-elected as Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society. First elected to that position in December of 2009, she will continue her duties through 2011, the International Year of Chemistry (IYC).

In addition, Charpentier will continue to serve on the board as the Director from District VI, which covers 11 Western states, including Alaska, Hawaii and part of Canada. She has served on the ACS board of directors since 2006.

Charpentier emphasizes the importance of communicating the value of chemistry through public outreach and education, including the Chemistry Ambassadors program, National Chemistry Week (NCW), chemistry workshops for teachers and workshops to train university students for job interviews. She is an advocate for programs at the state and local level that support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

“Chemists are involved with nearly every major scientific development, whether that’s discovering and developing new medicines, improving the safety of food and water, researching new energy storage cells that make solar and wind energy more viable, or developing more sensitive materials for computer and electronic technologies,” Charpentier said. “Innovations in chemistry bring valuable contributions to society and address many of the world’s most pressing challenges. We are dedicated to improving people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.”

Charpentier received a B.S. in 1974 and a Ph.D. in 1981 from the University of Houston. She lives in Palo Alto, Calif.

An ACS member since 1982, she has served on and chaired a variety of Society committees and task forces at the local and national levels, including those focused on policy, nominations, local sections, governance, program review and communications. She has also been chair of the Cincinnati and Santa Clara Valley Local Sections.
