Following a one-year break, the annual Jackson County Extension Service Field Day will reconvene on Wednesday, July 25.

“We have several good things to show and talk about including both on-farm demonstrations and some of the work here at the Newport Research Station,” says Randy Chlapecka, County Extension Agent-Staff Chair.

The schedule is as follows:

9:00 a.m.-- Nitrogen Soil Test for Rice (N-STaR), D&M Farms. From Newport, cross the Blue Bridge. From the Junction of Highways 367 and 14, take Highway 367 southwest for 2.4 miles. Turn right at the black shed and the N-STaR demonstration field will be on the right (north) side of the gravel road. Go to the west side of the field and turn north on the field road.  There will be two red flags on the outside levee where we will assemble. Trent Roberts, developer of the N-STaR program, will discuss the status of the program and demonstrate how to take the soil samples.

9:40 a.m.-- Max-Yield Soybean Research, DID Farms. From Exit 83 on Highway 67, take Highway 384 east. Turn north on Commerce Boulevard (the road that goes to the new school). There will be two red flags on the edge of the field where attendees will assemble. People can park on either side of Commerce Boulevard. Larry Purcell and graduate student Ryan Van Roekel will discuss research they are conducting to maximize soybean yields in Arkansas. This is one of three commercial fields in the state they are working on.

10:15 a.m.-- Arkansas Corn Standardized County Hybrid Trial, J&A Farms. From Exit 80 on Highway 67, take Highway 14 east for approximately one-half mile. The trial is on the right. There is a field road on the north edge of the field paralleling the highway. You can turn in near the house to get on that road and park. Company reps will discuss their hybrids in the trial and Jason Kelley will discuss timely items related to corn production.

10:45 a.m.-- Newport Research Station. Corn and Soybean Disease Research; Edemame and other Soybean Production Research; and Palmer Pigweed Control in Soybeans -- Travis Faske, Jeremy Ross, and Bob Scott will discuss their research at the Newport Research Station on these topics.

Noon– Lunch, Jackson County Extension Office. Following lunch, there will be short presentations from Jason Kelley on wheat production and Scott Stiles on the outlook for commodity prices and input costs.

“I hope to see a good crowd at each of the stops,” said Chlapecka. “Hopefully we will see a good rain between now and then along with a drop in the temperatures.

“I don’t want anyone to feel that they have to attend all of the stops in order to attend at all. Feel free to attend any or all of the stops. If you’re going on the field stops and have an opportunity to carpool with someone else, please do so.”
