The annual Jackson County Extension Service Crop Production Meeting will be held on Friday, Jan. 13 at the ASU-Newport Student/Community Center.  

On the agenda:

A catfish lunch will be served.

“There are also several Extension-related educational meetings coming up in January that I’m sure many will be interested in,” said Randy Chlapecka, Jackson County Extension staff chair.

Those include:

Training will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the ASU-Newport Center for the Arts (Room 108).

“Please note that this is not our normal meeting room. This is the building on the right (south) side of the street after you enter campus. You should have received or will be receiving a letter from the Plant Board if you need to be recertified this year, and I will be sending a reminder letter to those on the Plant Board list the week before the training. If you have any questions about your recertification status, let me know.”

The conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the ASU Alumni Center in Jonesboro.

“I regret that there is a conflict on this date with Pesticide Applicator Training,” said Chlapecka.“If you need to attend Pesticide Applicator Training this year but also want to attend this conference, please go ahead and attend the conference. If needed, I will have another Pesticide Applicator Training at a later date.”

The theme for this year’s conference is Superior Management Strategies. Topics will include crop management strategies, aflatoxin control: today and in the future, new market opportunities for sorghum, federal programs for irrigation upgrades, interactive storage analysis tools for growers, marketing strategies for corn and sorghum, and the 2012 farm bill.

More than $5,000 worth of door prizes will be given including seed, pesticides, gift cards, and more.
