Here are 10 things to help you in the field or market your crops or just get you to thinking:

1. How to kill corn to re-plant It looks like Mid-South farmers will be re-planting a good bit of the March-planted corn. There has been a lot of research on removing corn stands in the past and there are several options to consider.

2. Only weather can push corn/bean prices higher “A lot of farmers have been pie-in-the-sky, thinking that (corn and soybean) prices could keep holding for some time,” says analyst Peter Georgantones. “There’s going to be a lot of disappointed people out there because you’re not going to see $6 December corn … not seeing $14 November soybeans or anything like that.”

3. Ample time to plant Mid-South fields Mid-South farmers are all into planting as early as possible. However, there can also be advantages to planting when the soils have warmed up more.

4. Too late to price wheat? Wheat prices have declined about $2.20 over the last four months, $1 in the last month. Yet, it may still be a good time to price wheat. The decision depends on the current price relative to historical prices, how much lower prices can go, and what the current price means to the decision maker.

5. New trading hours for CBOT, KCBT New trading hours in the Chicago Board of Trade and Kansas City Board of Trade are expected to improve liquidity and market performance. Liquidity allows soybean traders to move in and out of markets more freely. And with fewer trading hours, the volume of buyers and sellers will be more highly concentrated.

6. What’s the yield cost of continuous corn? Although corn can be cropped continuously, it is widely accepted that there is a yield reduction compared to corn rotated with soybeans, generally in the range of 20 to 30 bushels per acre.

7. Farmers are buying equipment – so far Well, there's nothing like an historic drought to put the ol' kibosh on equipment sales, but February numbers from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers indicate farm wallets are still wide open!

8. Swimming pigs, giant cat-eating spiders At the rate bogus content proliferates and given the ease with which any photograph or video can be faked and digitally manipulated, the Web is rapidly becoming little more than a vast repository of misinformation … and outright lies.

9. PETA drones – trophies for hunters? PETA intends to monitor American hunters with drones. Be careful what you wish for. PETA has announced plans to film U.S. hunters with drones, declaring it "will soon have some impressive new weapons at its disposal to combat those who gun down deer and doves."

10. AGCO’s new planters Since the 1970s the White Planter has carved its own niche in the seeding market with its positive-pressure air system. For the 2014 planting season the company is rolling out the 9000-Series row unit and will offer is first-ever center-fill 12-row, 30-inch machine.
