LSU AgCenter agent wins service award

An LSU AgCenter agent has been recognized with one of the top awards from the Louisiana Sweet Potato Association. County agent Myrl Sistrunk of West Carroll Parish received the Distinguished Service Award from the Louisiana Sweet Potato Association during the association's annual meeting Jan. 11 in Oak Grove, La.

“I was completely surprised I got this award,” Sistrunk said, adding, “It is a pleasure and an honor to be recognized by this group. It is always great when you get recognized by one of the commodity groups you work with.”

Sistrunk has spent more than 28 years with the LSU AgCenter and has been a member of the Louisiana Sweet Potato Association for about 15 years. He began his career with the LSU AgCenter as a 4-H agent in West Carroll Parish in 1977. He later moved to Madison Parish, but returned to West Carroll Parish late in 1989 to serve as an agriculture agent.

Sistrunk specializes in row crop work, as well as sweet potatoes and the commercial vegetables grown in northeast Louisiana.

Bob Hutchinson, the LSU AgCenter's regional director for northeast Louisiana, applauded Sistrunk and said the honor is a testament to the work done by LSU AgCenter faculty members.

The Louisiana Sweet Potato Association's Distinguished Service Award is given annually to the person who has done the greatest amount of work to promote the state's sweet potato industry.
