BULL-UP TIME: Today’s beef bulls are expected to provide high-performance genetics. This bull test sale backs it up with data.

Some of the best beef genetics in the Northeast will be up for bids at Pennsylvania’s 44th Performance-tested Bull Sale. Afterward, a number of Angus and Simental females will be sold. And the Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association will host a trade show.

It all comes together at Pennsylvania’s Livestock Evaluation Center in Pennsylvania Furnace, Centre County, Friday, March 31. The bull sale kicks off at noon.

Bulls enrolled in the program have completed a 112-day test evaluating average daily gain, weight per day of age, feed efficiency, loin muscle size and fat deposition. All bulls offered must pass a breeding soundness exam to be considered for the sale.

Not all bulls tested will be selected for the sale. The sale committee will evaluate the bulls that complete the test and select the best bulls for auction based on their performance in all components of the test.

What’s on the hoof?
Some 178 bulls were on test, consigned by producers from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Those bulls include: 106 Angus, two British White Parks, one Charolais, 19 Herefords, one LimFlex, one Limousin, 15 Red Angus, two Shorthorns, eight SimAngus and 23 Simmentals.

The fastest-gaining bull at the 84-day mark was an Angus consigned by Triple J Farm of Daisytown, Pa., gaining 6.69 pounds per day on test. The leading Simmental bull on test was consigned by Hillcrest Farm of Auburn, Mass., gaining 5.73 pounds a day on test.

Final weights and information are compiled in a catalog for the March 31 sale, available online and mailed by request. It’s available at the sale and online.

The Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association also will host a trade show at the Livestock Evaluation Center. And the Pennsylvania Simmental Association Spring into Excellence Female Sale and the Pennsylvania Angus Association Finest Female Sale will also take place after the bull sale.
