New Mexico State University will host the 2022 Beef Improvement Federation Research Symposium and Convention, June 1-3, at the Las Cruces Convention Center, 680 E. University Ave. Leading experts will provide information on genetics, selection principles, and how to improve beef herd performance.

“This is the first time the symposium has come to New Mexico, and we are honored and grateful for the opportunity,” said Marcy Ward, NMSU livestock specialist in the Department of Extension Animal Sciences and Natural Resources. “During the three days of the symposium, speakers will provide a unique perspective of ranching in arid environments, sustainability and global trade."

The first day of the conference, Wednesday, June 1, will include a tour of the country’s largest livestock crossing between Mexico and North America, located in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Lunch will be provided and sponsored by the Santa Teresa Livestock Auction and Asociación Ganadera Local de Juarez.

Thursday, June 2, will cover the topic of “Sustainability: Rhetoric vs. Reality,” which will feature presentations by Ruaraidh Petre, Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef executive director; John Crowley from AbacusBio; and Jason Sawyer, King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management associate professor and research scientist. These presenters will focus on the impacts of sustainability efforts on beef production. There will be afternoon breakouts with presentations on genomic research, practical application and the progress of genetic efficiency.

The last day, Friday, June 3, presentations will include, “Global Perspectives on Adaptation and Genetic Prediction,” by Tony Clayton from Clayton Agri-Marketing; Billy Estrada from Tres Marias Ranch and Phil George, Miratorg Agribusiness Holding production director, beef and lamb operations. The final general session topic will address environmental and genetic expression interactions. The afternoon’s breakout presentations will include information on estimated breeding values and trait development, carcass evaluation, nutrition and cross breeding systems.
