Expo for youth and adults; focus is on horsemanship skills

Load up the horse trailer and join in the fun of the Socorro County Equine Expo Saturday, Nov. 3, at the City of Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex, 1 Rodeo Drive.

New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service in Socorro County is hosting the event from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event is designed to bring together both youth and adults to work on horsemanship skills while having fun with other horse-loving people.

“This is a great learning experience,” said John Allen, Extension agricultural agent in Socorro County. “We hope they will gain a deeper connection with their horse and seek more opportunities to participate in activities with their horses, such as riding in open country and demonstrating their horsemanship at shows.”

In two riding sessions, instructors will evaluate the rider and give instruction. Riders will work on developing skills that all horseback riders need no matter what riding discipline or activity they do with their horse.

“Last year we had 56 participants in the event, of those two-thirds brought horses and rode,” Allen said. “The others were parents who participated in the workshops and attended the riding sessions to learn about horsemanship skills.”

Other workshops include basic equine care with veterinarian Dean Wilkinson of Animal Haven Vet Clinic, horse body language and round pen demonstration, and horse selection and judging.

“The horse selection and judging workshop is adapted from a National 4-H winning horse presentation given by Jeremiah Woodall and Sophia Moreno,” Allen said.

Registration is $10. To register, call 575-835-0610 or email [email protected] for registration form. Lunch, snacks and workshop supplies will be provided. Participants will need to bring their horses, tack and supplies. Helmets are encouraged, but not required.
