A junior livestock show at the Colorado State Fair recently brought in more than $476,000 from an auction of 105 animals raised and shown by young people from throughout the Centennial State.
The 2024 Grand Champion Market Beef, raised by Jake King of Washington County, was sold for $50,000 at the event, the Electric Cooperatives Junior Livestock Auction. The animal was purchased by the Sam Brown family. The event raised funds for youth agricultural programs.
By raising animals and competing in livestock shows, young people learn responsibility, leadership, showmanship, and the best animal care practices. Under the guidance of 4-H and FFA advisers and former competitors, young people across Colorado learn to use those skills to create a bright future.
The Junior Livestock Sale is vital to supporting the future of agribusinesses in Colorado. It demonstrates the importance of raising high-quality livestock and the work ethics and skills needed to pursue agricultural careers.
A list of winners is here. The state fair in Pueblo was held Aug. 23 through Sept. 2.
