GETTING GOING: Starter flocks of ewes are awarded to some North Dakota youth and young adults interested in the sheep business.

Kudos to the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association. Each year the organization gives starter flocks of 10 ewes to some young producers.

“The intent is to encourage and assist young people to enter the sheep and wool industries, and help sustain this important food and fiber industry and our American culture,” says Travis Hoffman, North Dakota State University Extension sheep specialist. “It is an exciting time for growth in sheep and lamb production in North Dakota.”

2017 is the ninth year for the program. Seventy-six starter flocks have been awarded.

NDLWPA buys the ewes and, with the help of the NDSU Extension Service, selects recipients from those who apply for starter flocks. The recipients pick the ewes up in September. NDLWPA also provides the recipients with mentors. The mentors answers beginning producers’ questions and give them advice on management, record keeping, setting goals and tracking progress.

Starter flock recipients reimburse NDLWPA for 20% of cost of the ewes in each of years two, three and four to keep the program growing for others. This year’s recipients will be recognized at the annual NDLWPA convention in Fargo, set for Dec. 1-2.

Applications for starter flocks are usually due in June of each year. Visit the NDLWPA website for the application. Submit applications to: NDLWPA, 3711 131st Ave. S.E., Tower City, ND 58071, or via email at [email protected].
