BEEF BOOSTERS: The IBIC board consists of 20 members from the beef and dairy community in Iowa who oversee beef checkoff programming and investments in research and market development.

Cattle producers from across Iowa have elected Kent Pruismann to serve as a director of the Iowa Beef Industry Council executive committee.

Pruismann, a farmer and feedlot operator from Rock Valley, will help oversee the $1-per-head national beef checkoff and the 50-cent-per-head state beef checkoff program.

Several producers were confirmed to executive committee positions; others were seated on the board of directors. Steve Rehder, cattle feeder from Hawarden, was re-appointed chairman of the IBIC executive committee.

Executive committee members confirmed include Janine Moore of What Cheer, vice chair; Dean Black of Somers, treasurer; Tamara Heim of Logan, secretary; and Pruismann of Rock Valley, at-large director.

Other members serving include Bill Northey, Iowa ag secretary; Joe Colletti, interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University; and Bill Geohring, Keosauqua Livestock Market, representing the Iowa Livestock Market Association. Two producers appointed by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association are Dave Rueber of Luxemburg and Danny Beckman of Danville.

Determining how to spend checkoff money
The IBIC board consists of 20 members from the beef and dairy community to oversee beef checkoff programming and investments. Rehder will continue to lead the group of cattle producers who oversee both the national and the state beef checkoffs in Iowa.

“My re-appointment as chairman provides the opportunity to continue the great programming we started with the new state beef checkoff program,” Rehder says. “The ability to add additional resources will allow producers to invest in programs that benefit the beef industry. One exciting area is production research, which is allowable under the Iowa state beef checkoff.”

IBIC welcomes new board members Kent Musfeldt, Mike Holden and Mike Keuning to one-year appointments. Musfeldt is a cow-calf producer and livestock product sales manager from Coon Rapids; Holden is a cow-calf and feedlot producer with a private label meat business from Scranton; and Keuning is a cow-calf, feedlot producer and manager of an order buying service at Monroe.

Others serving one-year terms are Scott McGregor, Nashua; Scott Niess, Osage; Dresden Petty-Wulf, Hudson; Corinne Rowe, Dallas Center; Dan Hanrahan, Cumming; and Diana Smith, Decorah.

Helping Iowa compete globally
“A focus this year is on reaching millennial consumers, health professionals, retailers and chefs sharing the benefits of beef and the cattle industry. These activities help drive demand for beef locally, within the U.S., and in the global market all aimed at helping Iowa farmers remain competitive in the marketplace,” Rehder says.

The 2017-18 national checkoff program, funded through the $1-per-head beef checkoff, will invest about $1.7 million in state and national beef promotions, research, consumer information and industry relations programs. An additional $1.7 million will be forwarded to the national Cattlemen’s Beef Board.

The Iowa state beef checkoff program, funded through the 50-cent-per-head checkoff, will invest $1.2 million in areas of beef promotion, research, consumer information and industry relations programs. The program has oversight from a 10-member board of directors made of cattle farmers from across the state.
