Ricky Burns displays a spring ewe lamb for bidding
QUALITY STOCK SALE: Ricky Burns, Flora, Ind., displays a lamb for bidding during the annual American Southdown Association Spotlight Sale at Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 16.

Thousands of Hoosiers head to Louisville, Ky., each year for the North American International Livestock Exposition, held at the Kentucky Exposition Center. It’s in full swing this week, with beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep and other species holding either junior or open class shows.

One of the largest events of its kind, NAILE picked up where the Chicago Livestock Exposition left off more than four decades ago. It draws exhibitors and visitors from all over the country. One 85-year-old livestock consultant from Omaha, Neb., says he flew in to keep abreast of what’s happening in the industry. His specialty is sheep, and he watched shows and visited with sheep breeders from all over the country during his visit.

Several breeds within various species hold auctions during the show as well. For example, the American Southdown Association held it’s annual NAILE Spotlight Sale on Nov. 16. The photo shows Ricky Burns, Flora, Ind., on the auction block with a spring ewe lamb.

Other Indiana breeders who sold animals in this particular sale included Craig Bowers and Bowers Southdowns, Lafayette; Dave Bechman and Bechman Family Southdowns, West Lafayette; Sheila Sink and Mackenzie Padgett, Lafayette; and Jordyn Leininger, Pierceton.

You can find results for breeding shows and other activities on an interactive website set up just for the NAILE show. You can also livestream many judging events from various species as they happen. Simply follow the instructions on the website and get a real-time look at what’s happening in the show ring.

The show continues through Nov. 22.
