Border collie Kat gathers up a set of sheep during Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island, Neb. It was part of the stock dog demonstrations where farmers learned how to train from pup on up.
Kat is still training as a herding dog. She belongs to Tim Gifford of Harrisburg, Neb. The two walked through the training steps for dog owners during this year’s Husker Harvest Days.
Inside the corral, Tim Gifford offers direction by voice, body language and stick to help his dog, Kat, learn how to bring stock such as sheep to him. It will help when Gifford is out on his cattle operation.
Kat, a herding dog, homes in on the rear legs of a sheep. She will run toward the feet to guide the animals toward the gate opening.
