Pocket PC cost software

Calculate the cost of livestock operations with the new Cattleman's Calculator software designed for handheld computers. The new software helps cattle ranchers and bankers make off-site cost calculations about livestock and integrate these cost projections with their ranch or bank computer system.

The software has seven modules: feedlot breakeven costs, grazing/pasture breakeven costs, grazing/pasture profit and loss, cow herd yearly feed cost, cow/calf profit and loss, and purchase price. Cattle producers may print the cost calculations from the handheld computer.

The software retails for $139.95. Contact Cattleman's Calculator Inc., Dept. FIN, 15390 E. Evans Ave., Suite 208, Aurora, CO 80013, 303/337-2866, visit or www.freeproductinfo. net/fin,.

Weigh-and-haul trailer

High-tech electronics now come in a stock trailer. Donahue Corporation manufactures the Weigh-N-Haul trailer that will weigh and electronically record the weight of each animal. The trailer is equipped with a 20,000-lb. platform scale, six weigh bars, electronic indicator, printer, and a cable to download information onto a personal computer. The operator enters each animal's ID number, and its weight is recorded. The indicator performs many other functions, such as providing gross, average, high and low weights of each load and 50,000 individual records. The trailers feature ⅛-in.-steel lower side walls; sheet metal sides, top and gates; and 7-ft. inside width with no fender wells.

Suggested retail price is about $15,000. Contact The Donahue Corp., Dept. FIN, Box 126, Durham, KS 67438, 800/457-7406, visit or

Color identification for cattle

A color wheel may be the solution to fast identification of dairy and beef cattle in the future. IDLogic Inc. has developed a new generation of patented electronic ID technology that uses a small color wheel to identify an animal. The color wheel is printed onto each animal's ear tag. Each color wheel has a distinct color code just like a bar code. But unlike bar codes, the color wheels may be read at 25 to 30 ft. away.

Called the Long Ranger, the new system uses a standard digital camera that is interfaced with either a computer or IDLogic's iPaq/camera combination called Tonto. The Long Ranger will recognize and decipher color wheels under poor lighting conditions and when tags are at a 45° angle to the camera. The new system is currently in the testing stage and is not yet available for purchase. Visit

Fast post driving

Shaver Manufacturing introduces a new self-contained mounting designed for skid-steer loader post drivers. The OH-100 mounting package will drive a 4- to 5-in. post into the ground in less than 15 sec. using minimal hydraulic power. It requires only 10 to 15 gpm for power. As the machine drives a post, oil is pumped through the hookups from the post driver's own 5-gal. oil reservoir. It will drive steel and wood posts and even railroad ties into the ground.

The price of the self-contained mounting is $2,900 without the post driver. Contact Shaver Mfg. Co., Dept. FIN, Box 358, Graettinger, IA 51342, 712/859-3293, visit or
