With harvest season upon us – a season that has producers moving fast-paced from dawn until dusk, Dan Steinkruger, Executive Director for the Nebraska Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds farmers and ranchers of National Farm Safety and Health Week, themed, ‘Working Together for Safety in Agriculture,’ Sept. 15-21, 2013.

Anyone who is directly involved with production agriculture knows that this is a tough and sometimes dangerous business. In fact, The Department of Labor has again named the agriculture industry as the most dangerous sector to work in, with 21.2 deaths per 100,000 workers annually.

FSA asks that producers occasionally take a step back from the task at hand to assess the situation and make adjustments that just might prevent injuries or save a life.

Since Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the first official document in 1944, the third week of September is known nationally as Farm Safety and Health Week. In his own proclamation of National Farm Safety and Health week dated Sept. 13, 2013, President Obama asks communities to remember agricultural workers’ needs in setting up health facilities and emergency response programs.

And although this particular week is designated as National Farm Safety and Health Week, Nebraska FSA hopes agriculture producers will adopt safe farming and ranching practices all year long.
