Hammer Farms invites legislators and visitors to learn more about irrigation.

LEARN THE LATEST: Farmers who irrigate or are interested in learning more about irrigation are invited to attend an irrigation field day Aug. 4 in Becker. Paula Mohr

The Irrigators Association of Minnesota is holding an irrigation field day Aug. 4 at the farm of Tom Hammer in Becker.

Attendees are invited to learn about irrigation and to receive information on the economic implications, conservation practices and production benefits of irrigation in the state of Minnesota. Additionally, they will see presentations from scientists, researchers and industry experts regarding soil health, pest management, irrigation best practices and public policy.

The field day begins at 10 a.m. on Aug. 4 at Hammer’s farm, located 1/2 mile east of Becker. The address is 15002 U.S. Highway 10, Becker.

Lunch will be served at noon.

Members of the Minnesota House and Senate as well as state officials and staff are expected to be in attendance. Social distancing will be maintained and wearing a face mask is recommended.

Agenda and speakers

Presentations will be given on issues important to farmers who grow crops under irrigation. Speakers include Carl Rosen, head of the University of Minnesota Department of Soil, Water & Climate, who supervises research in nutrient management for crop production; Ian MacRae, a U-M entomologist who conducts site-specific IPM and landscape ecology and population dynamics studies; Vasudha Sharma, U-M scientist who studies irrigation water management with a goal of addressing water quality at the Sand Plains Research Farm; and Andy Robinson, U-M Extension agronomist focused on potato production.

Also in attendance will be Minnesota ag commissioner Thom Peterson and industry representatives showcasing new technologies.
