Arizona workshops: Aug. 16 at the Yuma Agricultural Center at Yuma; and Aug. 17 at Arizona Western College at Parker

Summer monsoon weather on the move in Arizona.

The University of Arizona (UA) will conduct a free workshop on the weather and its relationship to pest management at two locations in Arizona.

The first workshop is Aug. 16 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Yuma Agricultural Center, 6425 W. 8th Street, Yuma, Ariz. 85364. The second workshop is Aug. 17 at Parker from 8 a.m. to noon at Arizona Western College’s Parker Learning Center, Room #104, 1109 Geronimo, Parker, Ariz. 85344.

7:45 a.m. - Registration

8:00 a.m. – Weather overview for Yuma and La Paz counties - Paul Brown, UA

A discussion of local weather patterns with an emphasis on factors that affect pest management, including soil and leaf wetting, wind patterns, precipitation, humidity, light intensity, and other factors.

10 a.m. - Insect management and the weather - John Palumbo, UA Yuma Agriculture Center

A description of how climatic patterns affect insect life cycles, movement, feeding patterns, and other factors; plus the impact of weather on various insect control practices.

10:45 a.m. - Disease management and the weather - Mike Matheron, UA YAC

The impact of climatic conditions on the presence and management of plant diseases will be discussed, along with leaf wetting, humidity, wind patterns, and other factors.

11:30 a.m. - Weed Management and the Weather - Barry Tickes, UA Yuma-La Paz Cooperative Extension

The effect of soil temperature, moisture, day length, and other factors on weed seed germination will be discussed, along with the effect of climatic conditions on management practices.

Noon - Lunch provided
