House members call for tough stance on policy towards Cuba

A bipartisan group of 104 House members told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a letter recently that in light of the Cuban government's new leadership, “A complete review of U.S. policy is clearly in order now.”

“After fifty years, it is time for us to think and act anew,” they said.

Rice-district Reps. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO), Marion Berry (D-AR), Doris Matsui (D-CA), Ron Paul (R-TX), Vic Snyder (D-AR), and Michael Thompson (D-CA) are among the co-signers.

“Our policy leaves us without influence at this critical moment, and this serves neither the U.S. national interest nor average Cubans, the intended beneficiaries of our policy,” the members said. A complete review “would send a useful signal to the Cuban people that we intend to engage with their government in new and positive ways, and also provide a new hearing for U.S. policy in many places around the region.”
