Harvest estimate: Texas cotton crop at 5.7 million bales

Texas Ag Statistics Service sets the High Plains crop at 4,010,000 bales in its latest estimates released this morning.

Reporting Districts 1-N and 1-S combined correlate closely with the 41 county region represented by Plains Cotton Growers Inc.

Estimated yields per acre for the 2006 crop are 919 pounds for District 1-N, down from 926 pounds in 2005.

Estimated yields per acre for the 2006 crop are 632 pounds for District 1-S, down from 757 pounds in 2005.

The production numbers are based on projected harvested acres of 2.675 million for the combined Districts. Estimates indicate that 1.028 million acres have been lost from the 3.703 million acres reported planted.

For the State of Texas, TASS places the 2006 crop at 5.7 million bales harvested from 4.2 million acres remaining from the 5.95 million acres planted for an average yield of 651 pounds per acre.
