Rain can bring more than just a rainbow to a grape grower’s vineyard: sometimes it will bring that white, powdery matter that wreaks havoc on the leaves and fruit.

If you had a Powdery mildew problem last season, your vines are at greater risk for this widespread fungal disease in 2019. Powdery mildew can overwinter in grapes and cause serious problems as early as the bud-break stage and before symptoms are visible, so it is critical to have a well-designed preventative program, especially when going into a potentially high-pressure season.

If Powdery mildew is left untreated, it can cause double the trouble, leading to another devastating disease known as Botrytis bunch rot. Prior to fruit ripening, humid conditions coupled with elevated nitrogen levels and cluster compactness can make for a perfect storm for Botrytis bunch rot. Grapes in condensed clusters can fracture due to pressure, opening entry points for fungus as well as a moist environment for the spores to germinate.

Experience has proved that a preventative program provides the best control for Powdery mildew and other damaging diseases like Botrytis bunch rot. Good early-season control not only helps prevent fungal establishment but reduces the risk of epidemics later. To protect your vineyards from Powdery mildew and Botrytis, experts recommend an application of sulfur in advance of the first sign of disease. Sulfur is particularly helpful in preventing Powdery mildew, as it attacks the disease-spreading spores and prevents them from germinating.

At the first sign of disease, power up your fungicide sprays. Arysta LifeScience is with growers every step of the way with a roster of proven products for grape crops that have demonstrated consistent performance. Eliminate Powdery mildew and Botrytis this season with ELEVATE®, PH-D® and PROCURE® Fungicides from Arysta LifeScience.

ELEVATE® Fungicide
Guard your vineyard, as well as your yield, with the help of locally systemic ELEVATE at bloom. ELEVATE is a protectant fungicide that binds with the waxy layer of the grape and disrupts the Botrytis life cycle from first bloom all the way to harvest. It the only member of the FRAC group 17 fungicide class for resistance management and, when used in a tank-mix or rotation with other fungicides, delivers dependable and economical Bunch rot control. Primarily a protective fungicide, ELEVATE also provides post-infection activity when applied early in the disease life cycle.

PH-D® Fungicide
A broad-spectrum, Group 19 fungicide, PH-D provides excellent knockdown of Powdery mildew, Botrytis and other secondary rot-forming fungi such as Cladosporium. Its unique mode of action makes it a perfect addition to your resistance management tool box. PH-D features a 4-hour re-entry interval (REI) and a zero-day PHI, and can be applied preventatively in grapes when climatic conditions exist for the development of disease infection.

PROCURE® Fungicide
Rapidly absorbable and locally systemic, PROCURE works as both a protectant and curative that’s ideal for in-season relief of Powdery mildew and other popular diseases. The fungicide has a unique mode of action and is tank-mixable, making it an ideal rotational partner with other fungicides, including PH-D Fungicide, as part of your resistance management program. Its flexible application timing and a 1-day pre-harvest interval even allows for late-season application.

Getting a handle on fungal diseases could be the difference between  good yields and great yields. For more information on ELEVATE, PHD and PROCURE, reach out to your retailer, Arysta LifeScience sales representative, or visit www.Arysta-NA.com.
