With rainfall due to El Niño during the maturation of California’s grape crops, the chance for disease pressure remains high, particularly at harvest.

Botrytis cinerea, which causes Gray mold, commonly leads to fruit rot. Early-season wet conditions can cause flower cluster and shoot infections, and lead to an increase in late-season inoculum levels. The pathogen can overwinter on grape clusters from the previous year, but it is also commonly present on other decaying organic matter within vineyards during the growing season. Infection of grapes can begin on the plant’s leaves, stems and bud axils, but as the berries mature they are increasingly susceptible to infection, with the peak of susceptibility occurring post-veraison. Additionally, as the berries ripen, fruit flies may help spread Botrytis spores on their bodies from cluster to cluster. To combat disease pressure, researchers recommend proper removal of leaves from around grape clusters to lessen the accumulation of humidity and aid in protecting them with effective fungicides.

Making sure Botrytis is kept in check at harvest time often requires a season-long approach and rotations with effective materials such as PH-D® and ELEVATE® Fungicides. These products, from Arysta LifeScience, provide effective disease control while preserving grape growers’ fungicide options for years to come:

  • PH-D – a broad-spectrum, Group 19 fungicide – has a 0-day PHI in grapes. As an effective tool to control diseases such as Bunch rot caused by Botrytis and berry infections caused by Cladosporium, PH-D should be applied preventatively to grape crops, particularly when climatic conditions exist for the development of harmful diseases. Its unique mode of action works by interfering with chitin-building enzymes, thereby preventing cell wall construction; this makes PH-D a smart addition to a rotational management program when multiple applications are required. Additionally, it is rainfast when dry on the leaf, and growers may apply up to three applications per year.

  • ELEVATE-50WDG provides control of Botrytis bunch rot on both wine and table grapes. It is a protectant fungicide that binds with the waxy layer of the grape plant tissue. In turn, it disrupts the Botrytis life cycle from spore germination to the beginning of mycelial growth and colonization. This results in excellent disease control when applied preventatively. ELEVATE is a member of the FRAC group 17 fungicide class currently available for use on grapes. When used in tank-mix combination or in rotation with other fungicides, it delivers dependable and economical Bunch rot control under a wide range of conditions. The product provides excellent crop safety with no adverse effects on fruit quality, size or flavor, and is easy on most beneficial insects.
