TCPB is also conducting a referendum on statewide increased checkoff amounts for corn and silage in conjunction with the 2012 Biennial Election. Eligible voters from all five voting regions will decide if an assessment of $0.074 per ton of silage and $0.01 per bushel of corn, which is produced and sold in Texas, would be collected and submitted to TCPB, effective June 1, 2012. The current assessment rates have remained fixed since first being established in 1990 and 2006 respectively, despite vast economic changes over the years.

A person is eligible to vote in the board election/referendum if he or she is, or for at least one production period during the three years preceding the date of the board election has been, a producer of, or caused to be produced, corn for commercial purposes. This includes owners of farms and their tenants or sharecroppers who would be required to pay the assessment. For a producer to vote in director elections, the producer must reside within a county located in the voting region in which they wish to vote.  All qualified voters across the state may vote in the referendum.

The director elections and referendum will be held by mail ballot. Ballots containing the nominations of all persons who have validly filed will be available January 9, 2012. Director election ballots will be available at grain elevators and Texas AgriLife Extension Service offices in each of the appropriate voting regions, or by writing TCPB. Voters will be voting for qualified candidates who have sought nomination within the respective TCPB voting regions where elections are to occur. Voters may also vote for board members by "writing in" the name of any eligible persons. Voters can only vote for candidates within the TCPB voting region where the voter resides.

TCPB referendum ballots will be available from the Texas AgriLife Extension Service offices and elevators or processors statewide, or by mail from the TCPB office Jan. 9, 2012.

For a ballot to be valid, it must be mailed to the TCPB, 4205 N. I-27, Lubbock, Texas 79403, with a postmark date of no later than Jan. 23, 2012. All voters otherwise qualified to vote as corn producers must reside in a county within the TCPB voting region where they seek to vote.
