Good crowd attends indoor field day

Weeks of rainy weather and the threat of a tropical storm dumping even more rain on Central Texas sent the 52nd annual Stiles Farm Field Day offsite and indoors for the first time ever Tuesday, but the crowd was eager to catch up on the  “next best practices,” as Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Director Doug Steele phrased it.

Participants heard updates on weed control technology in cotton, sugarcane aphid management in sorghum, flood and soil saturation issues in grain crops, and the pros and cons of various tillage methods.

Two young men received scholarships, a respected farmer was honored for his success and his contributions to the community and a new farm manager showed how to make plan B work well when nature makes plan A impractical. Here are a few shots from the field day.
