There is a new yield monitor option if you don’t yet have one on your combine or if you’re looking for something different. Loup’s newly launched monitor offers an economical way to get into yield monitoring. And there’s a bonus: If you choose, you can use the same terminal that displays yield data in the fall as a precise planter monitor when you plant in the spring.

This is only one of several products Farm Progress editors found at fall farm shows that could help you complete harvest more efficiently, store grain more effectively, or learn more about harvesting and grain storage all at the same time.

Be sure to check out the Bushel Plus yield loss checking tool offered by Lankota. This revolutionary idea uses magnetics to put a pan on your combine that can lower and collect any grain lost from the machine. It includes a device to help you determine how much you are losing per acre once you have objective input from your own combine in your own field.

The product is a bit pricey, but how much grain would you have to save to make it worthwhile? Combine experts such as Matt Badding of John Deere say grain loss is something every operator ought to take time to check. Some loss may occur before the combine ever reaches the crop. The header is a key spot for losses, Badding says. You may also lose some through the threshing process itself, especially if you haven’t taken time to adjust the combine properly and tweak it once you’re in the field.

Seasons with high-moisture crops or late harvest due to wet conditions make losses more likely. Even if you aren’t ready to invest in a tool to help you measure losses, experts suggest you can up your bottom line by taking time to make sure you aren’t leaving behind more grain than you should.
