USA Rice files comments on child labor ruling

Agriculture organizations are concerned that potential changes to existing child labor regulations will adversely affect family farms and young people in rural communities.

The USA Rice Federation joined more than 50 agriculture organizations in filing joint comments on the proposed rule by the Department of Labor concerning Child Labor Regulations, Order and Statements of Interpretation; Child Labor Violations, which restricts the ability of people younger than 18 to work on a farm.  The agriculture organizations are concerned that potential changes to the existing child labor regulations will adversely affect family farms and young people in rural communities.

Providing young people with the opportunity to be actively engaged in farm activities and other agriculture work in their community helps youth take ownership in the family farming operation. The USA Rice Federation believes young people should be encouraged to work in agriculture and that important lessons about farm safety are cultivated at a young age.
