Food stamp participants continue to rise across U.S.

Approximately 42.9 million people collected food stamps in September 2010, up 16.2 percent from the same time a year ago, according to the USDA.

USDA reports that 3,466,974 Californians were given food stamps in September 2010. That’s a 17.7 percent increase over September 2009. Currently, 9.4 percent of Californians receive food stamps.

In Arizona, 1,044,410 people were given food stamps in September 2010 — an increase of 10.9 percent since September 2009. Presently, 15.8 percent of Arizona’s population receives food stamps.
