DeLEY LEADS FFA: Sam DeLey from Shenandoah High School in Henry County, Ind., will serve as the 2018-19 Indiana FFA state president.

The Indiana FFA elected seven individuals to serve as state officers for 2018-19 before the conclusion of the Indiana FFA State Convention, held on the Purdue University campus. Sam DeLey from Shenandoah High School in Henry County, Ind., was elected as president. She took the gavel form Clare Baney, Fishers, Ind., who served as 2017-2018 state president.

Thirteen FFA members sought to be state officers and completed a rigorous interview process over the weekend before the convention began. A nomination committee made up of FFA members from across the state and former state officers conducted the interviews and prepared the slate of officers. The slate was voted on by delegates and passed during the final session of the convention.

Serving with DeLey as Indiana FFA officers will be Brittany Gonzales, Tri-County FFA, White County, secretary; Savannah Bordner, Carroll @ Flora FFA, Flora, northern region vice president; Nathan Deatrick, North Harrison High School, Harrison County, southern region vice president; Austin Berenda, South Newton High School, Newton County, treasurer; Chyenne Deno, South Newton High School, reporter; and Jarrett Bailey, Bellmont High School, Adams County, sentinel.

The vice president position is shared by two individuals to assure representation from both northern and southern Indiana on the officer team. The northern region vice president must come from Sections 1 or 2, making up the northern half of Indiana, and the southern region vice president must come from Sections 3 or 4, which make up the southern half of the state.

Note that Berenda and Deno are both from the same high school. In case you’re wondering, more than one member from the same chapter has served on the state officer team before — but not for nearly a decade. It’s not unusual to have more than one member from each chapter run for state office and go through the nominating committee process.

Congratulations to the newly elected state officers!
