There is a twist to the 2020 Western Farm Show FFA Food Drive.

The show draws nearly 3,000 FFA students from Missouri and Kansas, and most participate in the annual food drive. However, this year there is a new format.

In the past, the Western Farm Show awarded a $500 prize for the chapter with the highest number of nonperishable food items. This year, according to Ken Dean, Western Farm Show manager, all chapters that collect at least 200 items will be entered into a drawing with other chapters from their state.

One winning chapter will be drawn from both Missouri and Kansas, each receiving a $1,000 check to further its chapter’s agricultural education activities.

“We’re very excited to introduce this new format, which gives every qualified chapter a chance to win,” Dean says. “We think this will make the food drive more fun and competitive, as well as expand chapter participation and increase food collections to help combat food insecurity in our region.”

The food donations are given to Harvesters — The Community Food Network, a regional food bank serving a 26-county area of northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Over the past eight years, more than 34,000 pounds of food have been donated, enabling Harvesters to provide more than 28,000 meals for those in need.
