Sukup Manufacturing Co. recently announced it will open an on-site health clinic for all employees at its headquarters in Sheffield. One of the largest employers in northern Iowa, the company manufactures grain bins, dryers and grain-handling equipment. It plans to make some clinic services available to families of employees in the future as well.
The clinic will include five exam rooms, two offices and one lab. A registered nurse and nurse practitioner from Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa will staff the clinic. Sukup employees will have access to a variety of health services, including biometric screening, health coaching, weight loss coaching, smoking cessation, tele-counseling and other routine clinical tests such as for strep throat.
Both company, employees to benefit
“Research shows that onsite clinics can add significant value to the workplace,” says Samantha Petersburg, Sukup Manufacturing human resources representative. “Some benefits the company hopes to realize are earlier detection and treatment of illness, fewer emergency room visits, and reinforcing a culture of wellness here at Sukup.”
In addition to the health clinic, Sukup Manufacturing promotes wellness as part of its company culture by providing employee single health care premiums for free, providing fruit to all employees every Wednesday, and will take 160 long-term employees and spouses to Hawaii in January.
Making health services accessible to rural area
“One thing our employees love about Sheffield is that it is a small, tight-knit community,” adds Emily Schmitt, Sukup general counsel. “However, we acknowledge that can mean employees need to drive far distances for even basic medical care. The new clinic will make health services much more accessible and, we hope, lead to a happier and healthier workforce.”
"We are very excited to support Sukup Manufacturing in improving the health of their employees," says Dan Varnum, president and CEO of Mercy-North Iowa. "Mercy is committed to making this a successful partnership, and we see this as a positive step forward in the focus on overall community wellness."
Employees may make appointments at the clinic beginning in January.
