For 2022, John Deere will target increased capacity and efficiency with the company's third generation of round-bale cotton harvesters, the CP770 picker and CS770 stripper.

The John Deere 690 was introduced to the market in 2015 as an update to the John Deere 7760, which a decade ago changed on-the-go harvest and ginning with its round modules.

Christopher Murray, John Deere product marketing manager, said the new 770s are more than an update. The project started four years ago and included direct input from growers across the U.S. cotton belt, including in the Southeast, Midsouth and Southwest, along with global customers, such as in Australia.

"We worked closely with a core team of customers, both cotton picker customers and cotton stripper customers, from the onset to get their feedback and to get them around machines early so that we knew that as we were designing and making iterations that the customers' input was being used to make these updates," Murray told Farm Progress in a Teams interview.

The results are two cotton harvesters, he said, 75% all-new from the ground-up with a platform John Deere can use for many years.

The CP770 has the new John Deere PRO16 HS Row Unit, fitted with high-speed stalk lifters and 'ultra-fast' cotton-grabbing spindles, and it makes round modules 2% larger and 5% more dense than its predecessor. Once it collects the cotton, the CP770 can wrap and eject a module in just over 30 seconds.

The CP770 might appeal to farmers with larger cotton acres or custom harvesters who want to cover the most acres per hour, he said.

The CS770 comes with a new three-drum, 75-inch-wide cleaner to remove plant material from seed cotton in the field. "Customers have commented on how much cleaner the round modules are coming off the 770 versus the 690 machines side by side in the field," he said.

Both harvesters have the new John Deere 13.6L PowerTech engine and hydraulic power module, improving fuel efficiency, according to the company, by up to 20% for the CP770 and up to 15% for the CS770. "When combined with the updated crop handling components, these systems work together to help farmers harvest more pounds of cotton per hour at faster speeds than previous models," he said.

The 770 cabs are 30% larger than the 690 cab, he said, with improved visibility to the places growers want to see with strategically placed cameras, mirrors and lighting.

The CP770 and the CS770 come equipped with John Deere Generation 4 Display and JDLink Connect.

"Customers will be able to price and work with their dealers starting this October to configure a machine that best meets their farm operation needs, and we will start shipping the harvesters the spring of 2022 to John Deere dealers," Murray said.
