LEADERSHIP REWARDED: 4-H and FFA teach youth more than how to show livestock. These two organizations teach leadership qualities, and those qualities were rewarded as 56 youth received the Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association 4-H Purple Ribbon Auction Scholarships.Kevin Schulz

In a strong show of support for the state’s youth, the Minnesota Livestock Breeders’ Association (MLBA) 4-H Purple Ribbon Auction Scholarships totaling $140,500 were awarded to 56 4-H and FFA members.

Participants are selected based on leadership experience and personal growth achievements. Additionally, the scholarship rewards academic excellence and outstanding livestock production.

This year, $5,000 scholarships were given to 14 youths, $2,500 scholarships were given to 19 and $1,000 was awarded to 23. “The support from the greater livestock community is phenomenal and very appreciated,” MLBA Secretary Steve Pooch says.

Since the inception of the scholarship program, there have been 654 scholarships given totaling $1,099,500.

The funding equation for the scholarships is a combination of donations from livestock industry leaders and supporters matched by MLBA/4-H Purple Ribbon Auction proceeds.

Each year during the Minnesota 4-H State Fair, a purple ribbon auction is conducted to sell the premiums of outstanding youth livestock exhibits, with 80% of the funds going directly to the youth and the remaining invested in the scholarship fund and expenses related to the auction.
