FARM PROGRAM CUTS MAY HURT

There will be efforts to cut farm program spending again this year, with the federal budget deficit projected to balloon to $400 billion before including supplemental appropriations for the war in Iraq. But, according to Doane's Agricultural Report, this time the cuts could hurt.

However, for the most part, Congress has more important issue to deal with this year and ag cuts could be pushed to the back burner. With elections in November, the Congressional session will be short, contentious and most likely unproductive.

Some members of Congress will push for an extension of the current farm bill for another year to buy time, but the administration and key members of Congress are against it.
