Former U.S. Sens. Trent Lott of Mississippi and John Breaux of Louisiana will join the Delta Council for a virtual meeting on Nov. 12.

The two senators will give their perspectives on the results of the 2020 Presidential election, which will have taken place a week before the council meeting.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the council's annual meeting, which usually takes place in late spring each year, was canceled. The November meeting will be held virtually due to the same concerns regarding the pandemic.

Delta Council President Paul Hollis of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, stated on the Delta Council website, “It is an unfortunate reality in 2020 that we cannot meet in person, but this format will allow for us to convey the Delta’s policy and issue priorities. We hope that our members and friends will join us, and we look forward to Sens. Lott and Breaux’s analysis of the 2020 elections.”

Breaux, a Democrat, represented Louisiana's 7th District in the House of Representatives from 1972 until 1987. He was elected to serve in the Senate beginning in 1987 and served there until he retired in 2005. He was considered a centrist while in Congress.

Lott also began his career in the U.S. House of representatives after being elected to replace Rep. William M. Colmer of Mississippi. Lott served as Colmer's administrative assistant prior to being elected to the House.

Lott was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988. In 1995 he became Senate Majority Whip for the Republicans and in 1996 Senate Majority Leader, replacing Bob Dole of Kansas who was running for President. Lott resigned from Congress in 2007.

Breaux and Lott continue to work in the interest of the region they served in Congress, often together, in consulting or lobbying efforts.

The Delta Council is an economic development organization that represents the Mississippi Delta region. It was started in 1935 to bring together agricultural, business and professional leadership to help improve the economic health of the Delta.

To attend the November meeting virtually, email the council at  [email protected] or call 662-686-3350 to receive the meeting access code or dial-in number.
