You have to try this sandwich to appreciate it

pork burger, peanut butter and pineapple ring on a bun.
NEW DELICACY: Yes, there’s peanut butter oozing out under that pork burger and a pineapple ring on top of it. Served at the Indiana Pork tents at the state fair, it was a delicious combination.
Hoosier Fare: Who says pork, peanut butter and pineapple don’t go together?

I will be the first to admit that when I heard Indiana Pork was going to feature a new sandwich at the state fair of a pork burger, peanut butter and pineapple, I was skeptical. I like all three of these — but the thought of combining them didn’t seem to click.

Indiana Pork offered the sandwich as its special feature for the “Wonderful World of Food,” which was the theme at the 2017 Indiana State Fair. The sandwich was available at all of the Indiana Pork tents on the grounds.

It consisted of a grilled pork burger laid on top of a layer of peanut butter, with a pineapple ring atop the pork burger. The entire concoction was served inside a tasty bun like any other pork burger.

This was not any other pork burger! One bite told me someone had done their homework on this one. The pork burger, juicy and tasty as always, seemed to pick up extra flavor from the gooey layer of peanut butter oozing underneath it. To get the full effect, you needed to make sure you got some pineapple in every bite. It’s a combination that works very well!

The only problem with this one is there isn’t a restaurant that we know of that will be serving this year-round. It’s too early to even know if it will make it back on the pork tent menu for next year’s state fair. In the meantime, you might want to try experimenting with your own recipe, with peanut butter spread across a bun, topped by a juicy, grilled pork burger and a pineapple ring on top.

We’re always looking for good food and good places to eat it, especially if it’s a restaurant you wouldn’t necessarily check out by yourself. If you have such a favorite place, let us know. Contact us at tom.bechman@farmprogress.com or P.O. Box 247, Franklin, IN 46131.
