“I wish more people had faith in Jesus like they have faith in our presidential candidates,” my husband said in response to election fervor, and to claims that an administration change will undoubtedly fix all of America’s problems.
I can’t help but wonder if people really believe this. And if they do, what happens in four years if and when we undergo another administration change?
Psalm 23
Recently, I attended a Christian women’s conference about worshipping God in the peaks and the valleys. One of the sessions was on Psalm 23, a well-known passage of scripture, often read at funerals. But, as the speaker pointed out, if we reserve the peace described in Psalm 23 only for death, we’re missing the point.
Psalm 23:1 reads, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
In the last several years, I’ve heard both Republicans and Democrats resort to name calling. One insult that’s routinely used is that the opposing side are sheep blindly following their candidate, often down a dangerous path.
And in some ways, this name isn’t wrong. Just like sheep, we wander and can easily be led astray. Just like sheep, we yearn to follow a path paved by a shepherd. Just like sheep, we’re influenced by what we watch, the company we keep and how we spend our time.
A quick Google search tells us that Americans spend an average of three hours per day watching TV and over four hours per day staring at their smartphones. I’d guess that recently, a good chunk of that seven-hour timespan has been devoted to following political news.
In this post-election season, I challenge you to consider, who is your shepherd? Is it Donald Trump or Kamala Harris? Are you seeking truth from Fox News, CNN or MSNBC? And what are you really yearning for? It may reveal the nature of your heart.
What’s next?
Today, the election is over. If your candidate lost, you may feel disappointed, depressed and anxious about the years ahead.
But Psalm 23: 2-3 reads: “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” Green pastures, quiet waters and a refreshed soul are what my heart so desperately desires now more than ever. Maybe yours, too?
Peace is within reach, even when it feels impossible. Peace is attainable if you turn your eyes away from election results and nasty Facebook posts, and instead turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Psalm 23:4-5 continues: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
Admittedly, these verses hit me deeper than they used to in a world where it feels like evil prevails. In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, the Lord has prepared an invitation to his table where your cup can overflow. Will you join him?
And finally, Psalm 23:6 concludes with the ever-present reminder: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Friend, if you’re following anyone but the good shepherd and seeking truth anywhere but scripture, you’re bound to be disappointed. Today and every day, I’m reminded that God is sovereign. In a world of political division, threats of war, natural disasters and so many evil things — our Creator is always in control.
