TOP HONOR: Timothy Berning receives the CCA award from Cecelia Lokai-Minnich, Ohio CCA past board chairwoman.

With more than 32 years of crop advising experience, Timothy Berning of Minster knows more than a few things about the industry. He was recently recognized as the 2017 CCA of the Year, presented by the Ohio Certified Crop Adviser Program.

Berning is an agronomist and crop consultant at Precision Agri Services Inc., providing  a variety of services to clients, including soil sampling, scouting, weed management, seed recommendations and variable-rate planning.

“Tim’s crop advising represents the right mixture of theory and practicality,” says Bill Lehmkuhl of Precision Agri Services, who nominated Berning for the award. “He believes the highest level of productivity on a client farm is achieved by focusing on all the processes of crop production.”

In addition to his career, Berning has made significant contributions to the agriculture industry. Berning is a past member and chairman of the Ohio CCA board. He has served on several state and local boards and task forces, including the Lake Loramie Watershed Association and Ohio Department of Agriculture Water Quality Working Group. Berning is also actively involved in his community as a member of his local church and zoning board.

“Tim has been dedicated to promoting and strengthening the Ohio CCA Program for many years,” says Jonah Johnson, chairman of the Ohio CCA board. “This award is a small way to recognize his contributions to the program and his outstanding service as a CCA.”

Sponsored by the Ohio CCA Program, the state award recognizes an individual who is highly motivated; delivers exceptional customer service for farmer-clients in nutrient management, soil and water management, integrated pest management, and crop production; and has contributed substantially to the exchange of ideas and the transfer of agronomic knowledge within the agricultural industry in Ohio.

Berning was recognized at the 2017 Conservation Tillage Conference on March 7 in Ada. He received a plaque and a $1,500, courtesy of PotashCorp/PCS Sales, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and the Ohio AgriBusiness Association.

Recent past award winners include Matthew VanTillburg, VanTillburg Farms; Chuck Gates, Seed Consultants Inc.; and Joe Nester, Nester Ag. LLC. To view the full list of past award winners, visit the association.
