This photo by Diane Johnson of Raymond, Neb., was chosen as the winner in the "This is Nebraska" photo category at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. Each year, Nebraska Farmer publishes the "This is Nebraska" winning photo from the state fair.

The photo was taken in May in the Sandhills west of Tryon during branding. A calf broke away from a group of rounded-up pairs being brought to a catch corral to be worked, so a ranch hand, Kasey Daily, gave chase to rope and bring it back to the group.

Diane Johnson and her husband, Ted, raise corn, soybeans and cow-calf pairs in eastern Nebraska. They first met Mart and Cindy McNutt, who own the ranch in the picture, years ago when Ted began buying bred heifers from them.

Since then, they've become friends and family through the marriage of Diane and Ted's daughter and Mart and Cindy's son.
