Photos remind us of a pleasant summer

Years ago, September arrived with a tinge of regret, a sense of lost freedom as I arose early every morning to board a school bus instead of heading out to the woods, the creek or the baseball field.

The late days of summer were still hot enough to turn our non-airconditioned school rooms into saunas. In high school, we had begun two-a-day football practice two weeks earlier and looked forward to our first Friday night under the lights. Maybe this would be the year. Sadly, it never was.

Now, I greet fall with much less regret. I look forward to the cooler temperatures, the excitement of my grandchildren heading out to school and numerous activities, and improved chances of a trout rising to take a fly.

I will miss the homegrown tomatoes we’ve enjoyed since early July, peaches we’ve found at roadside stands and some exciting travel.

It’s been a good summer here in Northeast Tennessee, so I thought I’d share some of my favorite late spring and summer memories with you.
