HAULING TURKEYS: It is estimated that truck drivers will deliver about 16,600 truckloads of turkeys to grocery stores in the U.S. for Thanksgiving.

This Thanksgiving, Sukup Manufacturing Co. will contribute to a meal for truck drivers who are working on Thanksgiving Day. “A Trucker’s Thanksgiving” will be held free at the Pilot Travel Center in Clear Lake, Iowa.

The truck stop anticipates nearly 60 truck drivers will enjoy a buffet meal with turkey, ham and traditional Thanksgiving side dishes. Two local Perkins restaurants will donate pie for the meal.

“The men and women who support logistical operations as truck drivers are critical to the manufacturing process,” says Andy Schmitt, supply chain manager for Sukup Manufacturing, which makes grain storage bins, dryers and grain handling equipment. “We recognize they spend long hours on the road, often away from family and loved ones, and we hope this meal will serve as a thank you and acknowledgement of the important work they do for companies like Sukup.”

Appreciation for truck drivers’ work
“Our company has been intentional about supporting the truckers who work here,” notes Sue Rother, Sukup fleet manager. “Our distribution centers are strategically located to allow truckers to be home with family at night whenever possible, and Sukup truckers receive the same excellent benefits that all company employees receive. These benefits include 401(k), profit sharing, paid holidays, 100% employer-paid health care premiums for individuals, and access to the new on-site health clinic opening in January at our headquarters in Sheffield.”

Rother adds, “We also invest heavily in their equipment to make sure they have the tools they need to adequately do their work. Supporting our truck drivers is very much part of the culture at Sukup.”

Buffet available Thanksgiving Day
Sukup Manufacturing has distribution centers located in Arkansas, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota. The company delivered products to 30 states in the last year, from Arizona to New York.

The buffet will be available from noon to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Pilot Travel Center is at 2411 U.S. Highway 18 East in Clear Lake. The truck drivers who participate in the meal will also have the opportunity to give a free-will donation to support a local community organization.

3 generations of Sukup family involved
Sukup Manufacturing is the world’s largest family-owned and operated grain storage, drying and handling equipment manufacturer. The company is headquartered at Sheffield in northern Iowa, and covers 1 million square feet of office, manufacturing and warehouse space. The company employs over 600 people, making it one of the largest employers in north-central Iowa. Three generations of the family are now active in the business.

Sukup’s product line includes on-farm and commercial grain bins; portable, mixed-flow and tower dryers; centrifugal and axial fans and heaters; stirring machines; bin unloading equipment; and bin floors and supports. Sukup also manufactures a line of material handling equipment that includes bucket elevators, drag conveyors and chain-loop conveyors, as well as a line of steel buildings.

Sukup has six distribution centers throughout the Midwest. Sukup products are sold throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as in over 80 foreign countries.
