Max Armstrong offers some perspective on the history of the office of the Secretary of Agriculture.

Max Armstrong offers a look at the history of the cabinet position for agriculture, which started as the  "Commissioner of Agriculture," it was later that idea of Secretary of Agriculture happened under Grover Cleveland. Abraham Lincoln created the United States Department of Agriculture, but it was some time later before the Secretary position to run the department was created.
