SPIRIT OF GIVING: Colorado Egg Producers and affiliate farmers partnered with Feeding Colorado food banks to help during the Easter holiday. The group donated 300,000 eggs to families.

During the holidays, the spirit of giving is seen in a number of ways. For 10 years, Colorado's local egg farms have been part of an effort to bring food to those in need. For 2017, the Colorado Egg Producers Association member farms partnered with Feeding Colorado food banks to help those in need for the Easter holidays.

The Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver, a Feeding Colorado member, parked its mobile pantry at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City ahead of the Easter holiday, where workers distributed a portion of the recently donated — 300,000-plus — eggs, along with other food items, to about 350 families. The eggs were donated to Feeding Colorado's five food banks.

CEP contributed to the food bank program and the Good Egg Project — which is an initiative to end childhood hunger through the American Egg Board.

Contributing farms for this year's program effort included Hickman Family Farms, Morning Fresh Farms, NestFresh, Opal Foods and Sparboe Farms, which have local operations in the state.

Year-round donations
During the 10 years that local CEP member farms have partnered with Feeding Colorado, the total in Easter donations has hit about 3 million eggs. However, the group donates eggs at other times than during Easter, and CEP estimated that with regular weekly and monthly donations, Colorado's egg farms provide about 1 million eggs per year to local food banks. So far they've donated about 10 million eggs during the past decade.

Bill Scebbi, CEP executive director, noted: "The farms that make up the Colorado Egg Producers Association take seriously the fact that one in seven Coloradans don't have enough food to meet their basic needs, and we strive to assist those families — not only during Easter, but year-round."
