We went down a bit of a wormhole this week with the "Confessions of a Farm Wife" podcast. Or in other words: We recorded a podcast … about podcasts.
Frankly, although Emily Webel and I have been doing this thing for a while now, podcasts are the new hot thing. Personally, they’re my favorite thing to listen to. I subscribe to a bunch, and I listen when I want to. I pause when I want to. I start it back up when I want to. It’s sort of like talk radio on demand, tailored to my interests.
Plus, there are a lot of great new agricultural podcasts — and a new network. Bradford farmer Rob Sharkey helped launch the Farm & Rural Ag Network earlier this month with a singular goal: help people find real agriculture podcasts. Basically, if you search iTunes for ag podcasts, you’re likely to get the “Backyard Gardener Talks Goats” or something like that. Definitely less production agriculture. But now you can go to the Farm & Rural Ag Network website and find podcasts like "Sharkfarmer Podcast," "Future of Agriculture Podcast," "Ontario AgCast" and "The Farmer & The City Girl Podcast." All are produced by farmers or agriculturalists, talking about the stuff we care about in production agriculture. And they're all in one place.
We talk about that more in this episode, plus the question: Are podcasts the new blogs? I think that’s a definite possibility, and we get into the whys and wherefores.
Plus, my cohort Emily and I will be at the Women in Agriculture Conference on Friday, talking about podcasts (again) and recording live. So if you’re anywhere near the Quad Cities, I highly recommend that conference.
So give this a listen. We’re talking food, family and farming … and podcasting. You can find us on Instagram: @emilywebel and @hspangler, and we’re on Twitter: @emily_webel and @hollyspangler. And if you’re so inclined, leave us a little iTunes review, because that helps other people find us, too.
