A fresh start to a fresh new year is the perfect excuse for making time to explore your own backyard! We’ve got 22 ideas for exploring the Sunflower State in 2022.

  1. Get lost in small-town charm. You’ll fall in love with the charm of Kansas’ small towns. We recommend exploring places like Council Grove, Humboldt, WaKeeney, Seneca, Winfield and Syracuse, but there are many more to explore.   2. Celebrate a birthday. Who doesn’t love a good party? These Kansas attractions and communities are celebrating big things in 2022. Brant’s Market, Lucas and Plainville, will mark 100 years in business. The Cozy Inn, Salina, is celebrating 100 years of the best burgers in the state. Dodge City will mark 150 years as “Queen of the Cowtowns” this year. The Cosmosphere, Hutchinson, has been inspiring space explorers for 60 years. And Marysville’s Black Squirrel Celebration will hit its 50-year milestone.

  3. Mine Creek Civil War Battlefield Historic Site. Walk through history at the Mine Creek Civil War Battlefield Historic Site in Pleasanton, the largest Civil War battle fought in Kansas.

  4. St. Francis Motorcycle Museum. Take a ride to the St. Francis Motorcycle Museum in St. Francis.

  5. America’s oldest operating cinema. Watch a movie and check out movie memorabilia at America’s oldest operating purpose-built cinema, Plaza 1907 in Ottawa.

  6. Strataca. Ride in a train 650 feet below Earth’s surface at Strataca in Hutchinson.

  7. Oz Museum. Have an “Oz-some” time at the Oz Museum in Wamego.

  8. Syracuse Sand Dunes Park. Hit the dunes at the Syracuse Sand Dunes Park, the largest sand dunes park in Kansas

  9. Gordon Parks Museum. Gordon Parks was a world-renowned photographer, Hollywood’s first major Black director (“Shaft,” “The Learning Tree”) and a Kansan. Learn more about this civil rights leader, whose “weapon” was a camera, at the Gordon Parks Museum in Fort Scott.
