Earlier this year we reported on the rising trend toward certified pre-owned farm equipment sales. These CPO machines are part of new, or expanding, programs for the major manufacturers and actually build on pre-sale inspection programs that were done by dealers in the past.

However, these new CPO programs a different: "This program is nothing like what we did in the past," says Marcus Overmiller, service technician, Lang Diesel Inc., Smith Center, Kan. "I've been doing this for 14 years and this program is far beyond what we did in our old inspection program."

With every major manufacturer offering a CPO program, we teamed with Agco for a look at one to show you what's happening in the shop before that machine is put on the lot for sale. Agco dealers offer both CPO and non-CPO machines and find that there are customers for both. Kevin Lang, combine specialist and CPO program specialist, Lang Diesel, notes that in one case he had a customer who wanted the machine as is.

"However, he did buy a powertrain warranty. We opened the conversation into that service for him," Lang says. For Lang Diesel, which from the Smith Center location has sold eight tractors and three combines through the CPO program, the approach is a success.

Brent Lang, general manager, for the 12-store Lang Diesel operation adds that "CPO allows us to offer our customers a higher level of service and peace of mind."

Agco is offering a full warranty on CPO machines, with a $250 deductible for repair work. In addition, machines are being outfitted with AgCommand and users get a one-year subscription for that program. "With that they can try out the logistics program on their farm," says Kevin Lang.

In this gallery we go more in-depth into what happens when a combine, windrower and tractor come into the business and are put through the CPO process. This gallery just hits the highlights, this is a multi-hour program for each machine. Check out the steps technicians go through when taking a trade-in from a farmer and putting it on the lot as a CPO machine.
