Stihl has launched the new MS 271 Farm Boss chain saw. Stihl claims the new chain saw produces 50% lower emissions, reduces fuel consumption and delivers up to 20% longer run times on a tank of fuel, as compared to similar traditional two-stroke Stihl chain saws. Team FIN tested this American-made product and rated it on a scale of 1 to 5.

The chain saw has an 18-inch bar and boasts a 50.2 cc engine. Team FIN said the Farm Boss is built solidly and has plenty of power. It makes cutting a felled tree into manageable logs an enjoyable process as it cuts quickly and effortlessly. The engine is powerful, allowing the operator to work at a steady rate and make a lot of progress. At 12.3 pounds, the saw feels relatively light, especially when considering the power it packs. The Farm Boss has an anti-vibration system which helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience. The tool’s light weight, along with the anti-vibration system, allowed Team FIN to operate the tool for a long time without fatigue.

The chain saw features a pre-separation air filtration system, which boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system. Air drawn into the engine is separated by centrifugal force, which ejects the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This process results in less-frequent cleaning and maintenance needs.

Stihl claims the technology doubles the time between air filter cleanings. The Farm Boss also has tool-free fuel and oil caps with retainers that allow the operator to simply lift the lever and twist the cap to remove or tighten. Team FIN said the caps need to be lined up just right in order to twist on, but the tool-free design is a handy feature.

More convenience

A side-access chain tensioner makes it convenient for the operator to adjust the chain with a bar wrench. When installing and securing the chain and guide bar, Team FIN said the side-access tensioner is a little cumbersome, but overall it works well to get the desired tension. Compared to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw, some operators may consider this a better route. Also, the Farm Boss has a winter/summer shutter that can be switched to reroute heat from the exhaust to allow the saw to operate at optimum temperature year-round, and prevent carburetor icing when working in cold weather.

The engine cover is easy to remove, making the engine components easy to access and service. It has an automatic chain oiler that does a sufficient job keeping the chain lubricated. The chain saw starts well and runs smoothly. It’s also efficient — Team FIN said the chain saw has lengthy run times between fueling. Overall, the chain saw is heavy-duty and powerful enough to handle large jobs, yet still practical for small-scale jobs.
